Wild hen turkey at 4 yards! Waiting on the fog (late season turkey hunting)

Hunting public land late season turkeys can really test your patience. In general, they are less vocal & after an entire hunting season, birds are generally more wary. So, finding them can be a challenge. Come along with me on a beautiful foggy morning in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. You might be surprised how this morning unfolds! Turkey Hunting the mountains: How important is SLOWING DOWN in LATE SEASON?
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.4 месяца назад
Late season turkeys can be very tough (especially in the mountains). The full foliage coupled with pressured birds that are normally more tight-lipped add another level of difficulty. This highlights the importance of slowing down & being more patient. Tag along with me in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia as I press on to find one of those late season gobblers! Why TEAMWORK is the BEST STRATEGY for a public land MOUNTAIN GOBBLER
You know they’re talking mad shit to each other
Probably sounds pretty surreal in person😮
Just finished catching up with you Chad. It started out so gloriously out west!! I had high hopes your core area hunts would prove to be as fruitful. You certainly deserve the payoff for the extraordinary efforts. No doubt you view it as a very successful season. Anyone hunting 40ish days in the spring would be proud, no matter the number of birds harvested. It’s a pleasure to tag along with you. Enjoy the this time afield, while you remain physically able. You look to be in great shape, so I’m sure you got some years and miles to go. God bless brotha’ and be well. Looking forward to seeing your 2024 season!
Well, I appreciate ya following along Phil. I definitely don't view it as an unsuccessful season. I had more than my share of chances. Trust me, I don't take my time in the mountains for granted. I know how lucky I am to spend that many days chasing turkeys. Thanks again for watching!
2023 was kind of tough year for turkey hunting for me as well as. My friend convinced me to go out on the last day of season and it paid off. I'm glad I didn't sleep in that last morning. Can't wait for spring 2024.
Congrats! You never know when you might find a gobbler that's in the right mood. Thanks for watching!
If you don’t mind what part of Washington were you guys hunting
Chad, sorry to see it's over! Appreciate all your videos! If we only had a few more days!! I know it would get done. Next year!! Good health until then. Thanks Chad.
I appreciate YOU Marc!
Hola saludos, buenos muy buenos videos éxitos siempre me gustaría saber donde comprar el pavo que cuelga en tu carro para el mio también
It's a Champion Crow by Mike Battey (WildTalker Game Calls). Thanks for watching!
What kind of mouth calls do you use......thanks for the videos
I've been running Gulvas calls the last couple seasons. Thanks for watching!
@@claycomboutdooors I worked in the same plant as Gulvas.
I always admire your perseverance hunting the big woods where numbers are lower, especially with very little sleep after working all night. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures!
Thanks Tim! Appreciate ya watching
Thanx Chad for extending my turkey season. See ya next season. That is a great sounding crow call
You got to be the toughest turkey hunter I've seen. You show how hard it can get especially late season. Take care. I tip my camo hat to ya. See you next season.
I appreciate ya watching Dan!
THE best turkey hunting videos out there. You show what it’s like in the real world. And, the best yelp on RUclips. Hats off to you Chad.
I appreciate ya Kevin! Thank you!!!
For god sake. Drop the notes in your yelps!!!! You sound like a hen being electrocuted. No disrespect!! Just a word of advice. Good luck dude
Thanks for watching! I especially appreciate the advice
Mr. Claycomb, you are one tenacious turkey hunter. I love your videos. Nobody works harder or enjoys turkey hunting more than I, however, after watching your hunts, you might surpass me. If you ever decide to hunt Arkansas, well, I'd like to watch you call to a Natural State gobbler. Best wishes! Still love the calling.
Thanks Roger! I'll keep that in mind. I appreciate it
I suggest you consider this for next Spring. Go fill your tags. Forget the camera. Then guide some buddies as you film. You are killing yourelf.
I can't do that Richard! It KILLS me to go without a camera. Seems just about every time I've done that in the past, I wind up wishing I hadn't left the camera at home. Anyways, thanks for watching!
Thank you for taking us on your journey love the hard work and dedication Peace Out Brother
What brand is your crow call? It sounds great!
It's a Champion Crow by Mike Battey (Wild Talker Game Calls). Thanks for watching!
I've killed a few birds from a standing setup. But I wasnt trying to film either. Now I'm going to throw down a little rap for you. "You do it all for the footage c'mon the footage. So you can take that footage and share it with your peeps. C'mon share it with your peeps". Can you name that 90's band ?
😂 no clue William! I ain't much of a rapper
If you want to know it's LimpBizket
Those days make the next one much more special.. Turkey over the shoulder or not.. still the best content on RUclips..
No doubt. Appreciate ya Bradley!
That happens to us all.. you'll get one I have faith in you.
Like they say, what can go wrong...
Murphys law I think...thanks for watching Thomas!
Dylan needs to stop putting his back against those skinny trees, they wave around with every little move you make! That said, I really enjoy your videos because you show the good days and the tough days.
Was there a bird gobbling in the distance when you got busted?
There was Scott. Thanks for watching!
I had several of the same results this year myself. I look at the bright side because after the screw ups, I get to hunt another day. lol
I try not to let that stuff get to me. I know I'm fortunate to hunt as much as I do. But it's tough sometimes! Appreciate ya watching!
Your luck runs like mine. The later the season tha more goes wrong. You don't need to apologize, your on top of your game. Love your videos. Take care.
Appreciate ya Dan!
Almost my identical last week in PA except you heard a turkey?? Great hunt as usual, Chad. Enjoy every one!!
That's what makes it even more painful, Marc! They're not easy to come by in the mountains that late in the season. Thanks for watching!
Late season Pa - u hafta be almost perfect! Set up, calling, hide, etc. Don’t apologize though your videos are 👍
Appreciate it Brad! I'm still not sure if they saw me or just didn't see a hen, because they stuck around for a good while, putting...
Great video, your persistence is commendable! Looking at how tired you were, sure reminded me of turkey hunting.
Nothing like that feeling 🥱 Thanks for watching!
I know how you feel I hate when you spook a turkey would you mind telling me what brand of friction calls you use
Hey Larry! I run a High Class Callls box by Matt Van Cise (snakewood over plum) & a Blackstone Custom Calls slate over glass in a walnut pot by Dustin Jones. Thanks for watching!
These calling contest are F’n weird lol
That would be so much fun
It was a BLAST!
Happens to all of us, not many are willing to admit the failures of hunting though. It takes and show humility to show the mistakes great videos keep it up . 23:41
Sometimes I think it's better off sounding like a tom than a hen, in the late season.
I can't disagree with that. Thanks for watching!
I’d have to look at my book but I think I have a buncha birds killed on may 18th. The Thursday before Memorial Day has always been good to me for some reason 🤷♂️
Normally gets pretty quiet in my neck of the woods around that time. But when you find one that's talking, he's ready to play. Thanks for watching Brad!
Where did you get that turkey hanging off your mirror in truck?
Dave Constantine. He's an amazing artist/wood carver. His order info for those is on his Constantine Productions fb page. Thanks for watching Brad!
Yea those clearings can always get you....the best thing I've learned is stay out of it skirt it or just set up on the edge and call them in to you that's what I do most of the time actually....they like the clearings that's why they watch them excellent protection they know why they like them....well after along season it's time too work out the sling stings and all that stuff and dream about perfecting it all for next fall or the new spring😊....ya know maybe a guy could really get fine tuned and get it down so precisely them dagone Ole turkeys won't stand a chance someday😊...good luck....
I probably never would've struck those birds if I had stayed out on the edges of it. That was a pretty big cut with logging roads winding thru it. They definitely like those fresh cuts though. Thanks for watching!
@@claycomboutdooors yea if it was that big yea and they were being tight lipped I was thinking the logged off area looked fairly clean..I've saw cuts where they just leave tons of stuff laying and it looks like a nightmare and is really have no idea why they do that...
Chad, well said a kick in the nuts!!! Checkmate for Mr. TURKEY. Turkey hunting is a chess game??? Love it!! Looking forward to your next. Hopefully, you'll be able to say Checkmate!
Thanks for watching Marc!
I like your style Chad. Your in the timber when most have give up. Late season can be tough but it's over too soon. Love your videos. Keep em coming.
It goes by WAY too fast! I appreciate ya Dan
That's why they call me the turkey spookler.I wonder how many we spook without seeing them?
I hate to even think about it
It’s nice to and hear and see a spring day unfold even near the end of July. Next week looks like some more excitement. Thanks for keeping spring alive see ya soon.
Appreciate ya watching Gary!
In the scenario where the gobbler was drumming, why didn't one of you at least scratch in the leaves?
He was right on top of us (probably within range, behind those hemlocks on our left). Then after the drumming subsided, another bird putted to our right. We just couldn't move
Wonder what brand of crow call Chad uses? Sounds more like a crow than a crow does.
It's a Champion Crow by Mike Battey (Wild Talker Game Calls). Thanks for watching Dan!
Could you please tell me what box call you guys use
High Class Calls (bloodwood over curly maple). Thanks for watching!
Some days are tuff. Thanks for sharing the hunt. I watch videos to hear the calling and you never disappoint. You and Kyle have honed your skills and I appreciate it. Best wishes. O, I watched your work in Washington and wonder if we crossed paths at different times. I was there May 15th or so. It was pretty incredible.
Thanks Roger! We're always trying to get better. As for Washington, we were out there in April. But it was definitely a good time. Thanks for following along!
Many days, we hunt with results like this! But knowing tomorrow is the day!! Thanks, Chad and Kyle!
That's right, Marc. Thanks for watching!
It wasn't for lack of trying. Thanks for sharing
Thank YOU for watching!
